Project: Artists Tell Stories

For this project, I used oil pastels on white paper as the medium.

The story is that a boy from a very poor family lives in the outskirts of NYC and often has to scavenge for food on the streets in order to survive. One day the boy wanders into an old antiques shop, the owner of which has seen the boy out on the streets many times and knows about the boy's financial state. The boy asks about an old telescope in the shop and tells the owner about his fascination with the stars in the night sky. The owner then tells the boy about the telescope's history and gives it to the boy as a gift. In the drawing, the boy looks through the telescope for the first time on the roof of the shop at the vast expanses of space.

Unit 1: Artists Self-Directed

For this project, I decided to draw a scene that I found on the Internet. I really liked the vivid colors and beautiful scenery in the original photograph, and decided to interpret it into a drawing using PrismaColor colored pencils.
